Rick Miller

A good friend of mine, Rick Miller, died this week of cancer. Rick was way more than a friend - he was a profoundly decent person, an unreserved Liberal, and a political warrior with whom I went through countless political campaigns, crises, highs, lows and victories. He had been the President of the Liberal Party of Alberta and a MLA. I admired so much about him, but in particular, his sense of purpose and calm counsel and advice.

I thought of him this week as I listened to and participated in the historic debate in the Senate on the fate of three of our members. I hope to mention Rick in Senate debates next week as someone who fought often and hard to defend the kind of rights at stake in this debate.

Perhaps one of the most interesting things about Rick was his love for what some might call unconventional forms of flight, flying in gliders and those human-carrying kites. I keep seeing in my mind's eye this week something comforting: Rick where he would be immensely happy, flying but without being encumbered by either  kite or glider.

My thoughts are with him and his family.
